What exactly is a pulse wave?
Every heartbeat sends blood from the heart into the arteries, creating a pressure wave that travels through the arterial system.
As this wave moves through the arteries, part of it is reflected back towards the heart. The way the original and reflected waves interact is influenced by the condition and elasticity of the arteries.
With healthy, flexible arteries, the system can absorb some of the pressure generated by each heartbeat. As arteries become stiffer, the pulse wave travels differently and reflected waves can return earlier.
Pulse wave analysis looks at these characteristics to provide information that a conventional blood pressure measurement may not capture.
How is pulse wave analysis different from a regular blood pressure check?

What can pulse wave analysis tell you?

1. Central blood pressure
Your arm blood pressure is not necessarily identical to the pressure within the aorta.
Central blood pressure measurements aim to estimate pressure closer to the heart. This can provide additional haemodynamic information that may be useful when assessing certain patients, particularly those with hypertension.
2. Arterial stiffness
Arteries naturally become less elastic with age. However, factors such as long-standing high blood pressure, diabetes, smoking and other cardiovascular risk factors can contribute to vascular changes.

What happens during the test?
Pulse wave analysis is generally non-invasive.
Depending on the equipment being used, a blood pressure cuff or sensors may be placed on the arm, wrist or other locations to record the arterial pressure waveform.
The assessment itself does not involve injections or surgery.
At our clinic, patients undergoing pulse wave analysis are advised to avoid caffeine, smoking and exercise for at least two hours beforehand, as these factors can influence cardiovascular measurements. The assessment involves multiple readings, after which the results can be reviewed with the doctor.
There is generally no recovery period, so patients can return to their normal activities afterwards.
Can pulse wave analysis diagnose heart disease?
No.
This is an important distinction.
Pulse wave analysis provides additional physiological information. It is not a replacement for investigations such as an ECG, echocardiogram, blood tests or other cardiovascular tests when those are clinically indicated.
Nor should an abnormal PWA result automatically be interpreted as meaning that a person has blocked arteries or heart disease.
